Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete, Greece. It has a warm Mediterranean climate and during summer, the lowlands experience dry and hot weather with clear skies. The mountainous regions of the city are much colder and experience rain during winter.

Nikos Kazantzakis Airport or Heraklion International Airport serves the city. It is located 5 kilometers east of the city. It is named after Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek philosopher and writer. Since Greece is a major holiday destination in Europe, the Heraklion International Airport ranks as the second busiest airport in the country.

The airport primarily operates domestic flights to and from the country’s capital Athens. Some of the domestic carriers that have operations in this airport are Sky Express, Aegean Airlines, Cyprus Airways and Olympic Air. These airlines provide service to many destinations like Athens, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Ikaria, Mytilini, Kos, Samos and Santorini.

This airport also serves international flights to and from Paris and London via Aegian Airlines. Likewise, EasyJet offer international flights from London Gatwick Airport. During summer, international air traffic increases because of tourist arrivals. The rise in number of flights comes from many carriers that fly to Reissue, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom.
